Copper Plate Funeral Plaque – Lady Dorothy Wadham – May 16, 1618
This brass funeral plate is believed to come from Lady Wadham’s burial location in Ilminster, Somerset England.
It measures 9 1/2 x 20 1/4″ (20.4 x 50.2 cm).
Lady Wadham was responsible for seeing her husband’s wishes to endow a college at Oxford come to fruition. It was a difficult undertaking after her husband’s death in that a close family friend made a concerted effort to take control of her husband’s estate. Lady Wadham however, was a feisty one and fended of this financial predator and in the process saw Wadham College, Oxford come into being. She could be a role model in this day and age.
